Kenya Institute of Organic Farming (KIOF)

The Kenya Institute of Organic Farming (KIOF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization operating in Kenya and the Eastern Africa region that is promoting rural development and education in organic agriculture and related marketing services. Established in 1986 as a pioneer and leader in organic agriculture in the Eastern Africa region, KIOF envisions ‘to be a lead institution for universal adoption of organic agriculture” and is committed to ensuring global adoption of organic agriculture through training in organic practices, processing of organic pesticides, manufacturing of biomedicines, and marketing of both fresh and dried organic produce for human and livestock consumption. The organization is known for promoting practical training among farmer groups, students and other rural youth throughout the Eastern Africa region in keeping with its mission which is "to promote organic farming through training, producing, processing and marketing of organic produce for healthy lifestyle and economic empowerment".

Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN)

The Kenya Organic Agricultural Network (KOAN) is the National Coordinating body for Organic Agricultural activities in Kenya with a mission to coordinate, facilitate and provide leadership and professional services to all members and other stakeholders in the organic agriculture industry in Kenya. It envisions a vibrant organic agriculture industry that contributes to a healthy environment, livelihood security and responsive to a growing consumer market. KOAN was birthed out of a consultative process where organic practitioners agreed to come and work together to achieve the synergy required to develop the organic sub sector. The organization works through five thematic areas: Production, Training, Lobbying & Advocacy, Marketing and Standards & Certification.

The Ministry envisions a secure and wealthy nation anchored by an innovative, commercially oriented and competitive agricultural sector. Organic Agriculture Centre for Kenya (OACK)

The Organic Agriculture Center of Kenya (OACK) is a non-governmental organization focusing on creating sustainable livelihoods and landscapes for the small scale farmers in Murang'a County, Kenya. OACK is equipping farmers with knowledge and skills by training them and disseminating information related to ecological farming, particularly sustainable organic agricultural production while conducting on-farm trials to validate best practices as a way for effective dissemination. In helping farmers to become food secure and achieve improved stable incomes while conserving the environment, OACK is addressing issues of food, nutritional and income insecurity, unsafe food production, soil fertility depletion and general environmental degradation. OACK envisions “independent farming communities participating fully in the sustainable economic, ecological and social wellbeing of Murang'a County” and is "committed to strengthening the nutrition security, health, livelihoods and sustainability of farmers in Kenya through promoting ecological agriculture in Murang'a".

Participatory Ecological Land Use Management Association (PELUM)

Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Association is a network of Civil Society Organizations / NGOs working with small-scale farmers in East, Central and Southern Africa regions. The Association membership has grown from 25 pioneer members in 1995 to over 250 members by 2014.  PELUM- Kenya is the Kenyan country chapter of the PELUM Association and has a membership of 44 member organizations in Kenya. PELUM works through four distinct programmes to serve its members as follows:

  • The Research and Information Management (RIM) program which is aimed at ensuring effective Information sharing and knowledge management through an efficient hub at the PELUM Association Kenya Country Secretariat (Office).
  • The Campaign, Advocacy and Lobbying program whose aim is to strengthen the PELUM-Kenya organizations’ involvement in campaign, advocacy and lobbying so as to grasp the collective opportunities available in the network through the power of synergy to stand up against policies and practices that oppress the small scale farmers in ecological land use management and facilitate information sharing.
  • The Results Based Management programme is responsible for ensuring that targets are met and results are achieved as per the programme planning strategy. This programme also carries out the organizational and programme monitoring and evaluation activities of the organization.
  • The Capacity Enhancement & Networking program is charged with enhancing the capacity of PELUM Kenya member organizations and staff in sustainable agriculture and areas of need in capacity building and in promoting useful collaboration and good practices with like-minded networks.
